In Their Shoes - April 1995 - by MrM

*

You pass me by
Saying "It's a beautiful day!"
I answer back:
"What's so good about it anyway?"
I've spent the last 3 weeks
In a box on the street.
"Could you spare me a dime
So I can get a bite to eat?"
No.

Fine! Go on your merry way
Forget I exist.
Keep on not thinkin'
'Bout anything but your bliss
Enjoy your home and your family.
Don't even bother thinkin'
About little ole me, who said:

"What's so good about it anyway?
What's so fantastic on this sunny day?
You've got a job - You've got a place to stay.
You've never known a time
When things weren't going your way."
Oh no.

Turn around...
Walk on by.
Or look to the ground
As you quickly say hi.
Or pass me the dime;
But try not to touch my hand.
We wouldn't want to dirty
Such a sharp dressed man...
Now would we?

I can't say I'm bitter
I was once wearing shoes just like yours
I passed folks who looked just like me
And actedjust like you're actin' t'wards me.
Didn't know what to say
So I just turned away.
As long as I ignored them
Everything was ok.
But now everything
has found me...
In their shoes.
